This month the Creative Cutters group took Silhouette creativity to a whole new level and went a little “cookie crazy”! Normally, I pre-cut everything for our meetings but this time the members had to do a little cutting of their own. Only now it wasn’t paper or vinyl we were cutting – it was cookie dough!

I’ve wanted to plan a project like this for some time now and I was so excited to finally make it happen. My Silhouette Alta 3-D printer has been just sitting in the box, waiting for me to get brave enough to try it out. Now I had the perfect opportunity…and lots of motivation!

Cookie cutters are a great 3-D project for beginners and once I printed the first one, I was hooked. I even went on to design and print a cookie STAMP!

It takes 1 – 1.5 hours for each cookie cutter to print (depending on size and print quality) so I made several ahead of time and then demonstrated the printing process during our meeting. It’s mesmerizing to watch!

The fun continued when we got to actually USE the cutters. Thanks to my sweet mama, we had plenty of delicious homemade cookie dough on hand.

But cookie cutters weren’t all we had to play with! Cookie stencils added another fun touch to the decorating. I used Grafix .007 Clear Craft Plastic to make them and they were pretty easy to cut on my Cameo using the following settings:

Blade: 7
Speed: 3
Force: 33
Passes: 3

Last but not least, we each made a box to take our cookies home. I modified Lori Whitlock’s 3-compartment Cookie Box (Silhouette Design Store ID 132362) a bit to make this cute little 2-compartment box. I love how the acetate window lets the cookies peek through!

It really makes me smile to get comments like these after a meeting:

Last night was so interesting and mind blowing! My first time seeing a 3D printer. Too cool!!! And the cookies were awesome too!

We had such a good time last night! It was truly a creative cutting evening!

We had a blast baking cookies and decorating them. And then making the little cookie boxes which were too cute was really fun.

We had a great time, learned something new, and went home with goodies to share.

I’ve had so much fun playing with the Alta – experimenting with different shapes and learning how to improve my prints. I’ve know I’ve only scratched the surface of what it can do and now I’m eager to try even more 3-D projects!!! There may even be an Alta Plus in my future 😉 .
