When I first taught the story of Ruth, I focused on her faith, kindness, and loyalty. But the final part of her story—when she marries Boaz—reveals something even more powerful: God’s plan for redemption. As I’ve shared this lesson with young students over the years, I’ve come to appreciate how beautifully it shows that even sad and difficult times can lead to something wonderful.

In this Ruth Marries Boaz Sunday School lesson, children will learn about God’s provision through a family protector, the concept of a redeemer, and how Ruth’s story connects to Jesus. They’ll also discover how kindness, obedience, and trust in God can lead to incredible blessings.

Ruth Marries Boaz Lesson Summary for Teachers

When Naomi learned of Boaz’s kindness to Ruth, it was an answer to her prayers. She knew that Boaz was one of their family’s redeemers, and she hoped he would be willing to marry Ruth and care for them. But first, Boaz needed to make sure no closer relative wanted to take that responsibility.

Early the next morning, Boaz went to the city gate — the place where important decisions were made. He spoke with the closer relative in front of the town leaders. At first, the man agreed to redeem Naomi’s land. But when he learned that redeeming the land also meant marrying Ruth, he changed his mind.

To show this decision publicly, the man removed his sandal in front of the town leaders and told Boaz to redeem the land himself.

The people blessed Boaz and Ruth, asking God to make their family strong and well-known. Soon Ruth and Boaz were married, and God gave them a baby boy named Obed.

Naomi, who had once been filled with sadness, now held her grandson in her arms. The women of the town praised God for providing a redeemer for Naomi’s family. Obed would grow up to be the grandfather of King David — and many years later, an even greater Redeemer would be born from this same family line: King Jesus.
